This is fantastic. I've always wanted this sort of thing. `apt-get` based stuff is not transactional (package installation failure can leave things in an inconsistent state), not invertible (arbitrary scripts in the deb can - and do - run weird things), and not idempotent (you can install something, and reinstall and not get the right result).

I will be very pleased with getting the first of these, though the way it's handled, it looks like we get all three. The important thing, though, is having larger transactions (update tools X, Y, and Z at once or fail), and it looks like it should be possible to do this.
