I just wish that every application that uses tabs also has a way to collapse or hide the part of the window the tabs appear on. If you don't use tabs, then that dead area is just annoying. And a special curse for applications that put the tabs (or menu or other such controls) on the title bar.

Nonsense. Tabs work well. I use them in web browsers, text editors, and file browsers.
