Most religions believe the ultimate power belongs to God. I come at this from a Christian perspective. What blows me away is how the story of the Bible is the story of God asking people to trust Him, and people repeatedly saying: No, we got this, we'll pick our own rulers, thanks. Or: You're absolutely right, God, and that's why we're going to enforce your rules (as we perceive them) on others.
Seriously, read the Bible, just as a point of historical curiosity. It never goes well for people. Read the Torah. Read to Koran. Over and over again, some small group of people says they're going to run things on God's behalf, and it always ends badly: War, starvation, genocide. It's all in there in black and white. I don't know how people miss it.
Read your history. Governments did not evolve out of some high-minded idea of maintaining peace. It's just war by other means.
