They use linux because of dependency/driver problems on other operating systems. And I think they specofically avoid Windows Server on those big cloud nodes due to scaling issues and more barebones remote access tools, not to speak of linux being the cloud standard.
I do find the near global use of Ubuntu annoying... but I guess there is not a popular alternative? Red Hat and Clear Linux do not officially support Nvidia, rolling distros like Arch are a questionable fit for cloud (though I love it for personal ML use). IDK about OpenSUSE.
Yes true about hardware support. But Linux is advantageous for many reasons that made it the standard in large-scale cloud environments in the first place; largely because it offers much greater customization and control in just about every aspect. The cost/open source advantages as well.
