Ask HN: What can we, people in tech, do to stop mass shootings?

Maybe to make study process more pleasant for a young folks? When I remember my literature and history classes, they were so boring (teachers were excellent) that it provoked all kinds of bulling. Same to physical culture (sport) and labor culture (working with hands) and basics of safety and pre-conspriction training for young men (in these cases my teachers were... not motivated to make a good job). All of that classes I used to truant and you know what? If all that what happened to me happened in USA where it is not easy to truant, I would do maybe not shooting (no easy to access firearms) but definitely kind of massacre to my bullies and bully-sympathisers.

What tech ppl can do with that? Hm... probably go to teaching. And teachers please stop insist on studying boring classes and especially stop claiming History is not boring. Please, teach (give) Liberal Arts and nothing else and I believe most of that massacres will be gone.

There are organizations out there that are actively working to fix the problem. I say join one of them and use tech to amplify their message.

There is no magic fix. It's a matter of changing minds 1 person at a time and getting the right politicians elected that will do something about it. They must be from both parties and can't be at extreme ends of the issue.

The bigger problem is that I don't think any one really knows what to do about it. That's the first step. Understanding where to start so we can fix the problem.

Vote.

I say that because I live in a country where it isn't easy to get a gun unless there's a reasonable need for it. We do have stabbings (that one is harder to work around). But shootings are far rarer here than in the US, and mass shootings are nearly non-existent. Nearly all gun crap here is gang specific, and we just let Darwin explain the end result of that.

Gun play happens here, but not nearly every other day as the US seems to be dealing with.

The saturation of guns in the US is so high, that any legal ban is like trying to stop water with a fishing net. Even the word ban leads to record breaking sales of guns. This shooting will probably boost gun sales as well, because many will assume a ban is coming and stock up before they are not allowed anymore. Even if you were to magically collect as many guns as you can, that leaves the bad guys, still with guns, as anyone who has plans to use one would not be giving it up easily. Then there is 3D printing and self-made stuff. Americans don’t respect regulatory bans, so the approach has to be different. Education, monitoring, better programs to catch early-stage behavior. Many of the shooters target people they know won’t fight back - kids, elderly, people who are unprotected in one way or another. There is no shortage of potential victims. If you protect the schools they will switch to churches, or hospitals. The attack surface is so broad, it seems you have to narrow down on the attackers. Can tech help with that? Can Education? Can social programs?

Lobby for gun-control, vote and get used to the idea that a modern civilization does not need privately own weapons ?

There should be an app...
