EU citizens can get free access to it via Eumetcast DVB-S service for non-commercial use. A registration, an off-the-shelf DVB-S data receiver, a satellite dish and their decryption USB key is required. FOSS software like Satpy is available for processing those radiometric data. I can also recommend HP Zbook Ultra G1a. It's probably the closest thing to Macbooks at the moment. It has lower battery life and latest M chips are still faster but it's fast enough for me. The hardware is solid and sw support is great.
>> Paying 95% for crap from China that I have no intention of purchasing does not impact me.
I highly doubt you are not purchasing "made in china" or "made in taiwan" products. You likely just don't know. Even your Macbook or GPU card is made in China or Taiwan as are lots of components used inside "made in US" products. Same goes for clothing and shoes, american "brands" made in China, Bangladesh, etc.
Moreover:
- you don't have fully-local alternatives for everything
- it takes a long time and a lot fo money to build factories for local alternatives
- cost of labor is much higher in your country
The end result must be higher prices for everything on your side, and it's starting to show.
>> There are plenty of people around the world that want to come here and are willing to wait in line. I’m perfectly fine with the intentions and methods of the current administration
In the past, I was considering moving to US. I think it would be relatively easy for me (EU citizen, good IT work history). And I visited US couple of times as a visitor. But since Trump and recent ICE "methods", I am honesly scared to even visit US again near-term. I am glad I live in EU.
Software has gotten out of control. A simple Gmail client is now larger than an entire operating system was just a few years ago. And their “web apps” like Google Cloud Console, are so slow that they’re practically unusable in Firefox. Pinnacle of software engineering at Google :/
This happened to me as well with a secondary iCloud account, and I still have no idea what triggered the ban. Apple support said they couldn't reverse it. The account was on an old iPhone, and after the ban, it became impossible to log out, rendering the device e-waste overnight. I at least didn't have any valuable data in icloud. But that experience prompted me to stop using Apple products or any other device that requires an online account to function. Fortunately, since recent AMD APUs are quite capable, I sold my MacBook M2 Max and have happily returned to using x86_64 Linux. No more Apple in my life, ever.
Exactly. It is already wasting enormous amounts of energy for silly inefficient AI nonsense. The price of energy will go up due to high demans and at the same time it also produces a lot of heat. I am not seeing a very optimistic future for mankind...
> I don't think there are any. It is likely just a social media hype.
It's not hype. Here's a comprehensive review of a lot of terminals and Ghostty did very well--"State of Terminal Emulators in 2025: The Errant Champions" [1]
Can ghostty finally search in the scrollback? The last time I tried it it didn't support a freaking search. This is #1 feature I need from any terminal.
I use Ghostty because it is a native application, and it looks great on macOS and GNOME. WezTerm, Kitty, and Foot don't do that for me. Foot is great though.
After some update, Ghostty stopped working on Gnome+Mesa on older Intel graphics (IvyBridge). It doesn't really feel native to me if it doesn't run everywhere the toolkit it uses runs. I understand the reasons, but it leaves a sour taste.
