I wouldn't mind getting one myself

I can think of all kinds of wacky ways to crash one of these things.

Please do tell. Thanks.

Instead, think of ways to hijack it like the Iranians (supposedly) did. After all, you could sell it to the Chinese or Russians for a LOT of money. Go ahead I dare you.

As a countermeasure, we would have a second-channel kill switch and self-destruct mechanism. If you try to hijack it back to an unfriendly location, we blow it up when you approach it with resulting casualties. If you try to use it as an offensive weapon we use the kill switch and/or self-destruct in an area of our choosing.

To overcome the possibility of an external self destruct signal reaching the drone when you hijack it, you'll probably come up with tricks like bathing it in strong spread-spectrum interference or dropping it into a Faraday cage. Either can be detected and trigger the self destruct internally.

Perhaps you can disable the drone by hitting it with an EMP weapon but still recover it. Good luck.

That seems counterproductive. If you create a self destruct system that can auto-enable based on conditions, the enemy just needs to create those conditions. They may be deprived of the weapon system, but so are you.

After the last drone fiasco, how about GPS signal overloading?

Terra-forming (moving landmarks or painting hills with reflective paint of sorts) and cloud salting could also bear some interesting results to at least introduce noise into the data-input systems. Enough noise and you'd probably down something.

Def can figure out position in space without the aide of GPS.

Why "humanoid" robots? Why not just "robots" that can do a job no matter what they look like?

If nothing else, PR value. And to inspire new engineers.

If you want PR value, send flesh and blood humans. Otherwise send the tool that's best for the job.

One day, we'll recover sound from vibrations recorded in paint and mortar.

Where's the evidence we'll be able to do that?

In a world of capped data consumption, how would companies deliver 4k content over data networks?

One way would be to make a deal with the bandwidth provider to not count the content against any cap.

I'd always imagined that if Apple ever gets into the TV business, they'd follow the model they've used with the iPhone and allow the "carriers" like Comcast and Time Warner to sell their customers fat margin "smart TV" plans. At that point, you can treat any content Apple streams the same way Comcast treats their own video-on-demand: unmetered.

I don't like the idea, because it goes against net neutrality of course.

It's not, deal with X, customer don't pay for data! nope.

It's deal with X, customer pay extra, and he's:

1/ forced to pay extra for the 4K content in that case, else data cap explodes and that'd cost even more

2/ his choice is limited to partners

Google Fiber?

XBOX 360 avatars can be extremely customizable and are stored in a 3D format on MS servers (and likely on the console itself). The recognize many friends online because of their avatar.

I'd pay $$ to have a 3d printout of my XBOX 360 avatar...perhaps even with articulating appendages.

Today it's more about growing cyberspace than outer space.

OT: But wow at the blog spam on the old TC articles.

Some HN members know other HM members in real life. You have business or personal relationships with others that also read, post, and comment on this forum. Some of you have never met any other HN member in real life, but do consider some HN members as friends and acquaintances.

I, on the other hand, have met none of you and don't carry on a virtual relationship with any other HN member. I consume your news and up-vote articles that I want to see more of on this forum. And on rare occasion I will post a comment.

All that said, besides PG, I absolutely don't care what the USERNAME is of the original poster.

I do scan the front page to see if there is any article is an extraordinary number of POINTS or COMMENTS. POINTS and COMMENTS are probably 75% of the reason why I click on a link of the front page. And the more comments a link has, the most likely, I will click on the COMMENTS thread before I even read the article. 25% of the time I will click on a link because it contains a keyword (to include the URL snippet) which is in regard to something I care about.
